Mobility Scooters Compared to Power Chairs

Both power chairs and electric mobility scooters have done wonders for the elderly, the paraplegic, as well as those suffering from multiple sclerosis or other walking disabilities. Disadvantages of Mobility Scooters

1) Requires Upper Body Strength – The steering mechanism is similar to the handlebars on a bike, thus the user needs upper body strength and use of both hands to operate and control.

2) No back support So the user needs full upper body functionality to sit upright independently.

3) Only ideal for users that can stand and walk short distances by themselves or with a cane

4) Not well suited for indoors areas – Due to a large frame and wide turning radius, mobility scooters are difficult to navigate indoors or in narrow hallways.

5) Not covered by insurance most insurance companies refuse to cover mobility scooters.

Advantages of Power Chairs

1) Fully customizable with seats that may be raised and lowered.

2) Directional controls that may be in the form of a joystick, chin levers, a tongue piercing, or even a straw that fits in the users mouth.

3) Open front load for easy transfer.

4) Much smaller in size than mobility scooters.

5) Small turning radius thus ideal for indoor areas.

6) On board battery chargers – simple to plug in any wall outlet to recharge.

7) Adjustable foot rests to fit to the user’s body and for their comfort.

May be insured With physician consent, most insurance companies will cover at least a percentage of the cost of a power chair.

Disadvantages of Power Chairs

1) Expensive – Even the cheapest ones cost thousands of dollars.

2) Cannot be disassembled – Power chairs are meant to be left assembled.

3) Extremely heavy – An accessible van is vital for transport.

4)Low Ground Clearance – Maneuvering over rough terrain can be challenging.

5) No extra luggage – Are meant to carry the user only and don’t have baskets in front or below the seat like mobility scooters.

6) Less Power than Mobility Scooters – Have smaller motors and can usually only drive up an 8 degree incline at most.

A recliner chair is an armchair whose back can be lowered and foot can be raised to allow the sitter to recline in it. There are a number of types and styles of reclining chairs depending upon their reclining capacity. Apart from this the recliner chairs are also available in a variety of colours and upholstery choices.

For knowing about the different styles and choices of recliner chairs just go on the internet and search for recliner chairs. You will find various different styles and types of recliner chairs, and you can easily select one for yourself that suits your specifications and budget.

Here are the basic three types of recliner chairs available in the market. They are basically categorized according to the number of positions they can recline to :

1. Recliner chair with two positions : These types of recliner chairs reline only to a 45 degree angle and back to its normal position. It is very good and useful when relaxing or reading, but becomes uncomfortable if you want to sleep or think on it. Recliner chairs with two position reclines are the cheapest, because they do not have as much mechanism built in them like the higher models.

2. Recliner chair with three positions : Three position recliner chairs can be reclined and inclined back in three different positions. They are much more comfortable than their two position reclining counter-parts. Hence you can go for them with a normal budget.

3. Recliner chair with infinite positions : In this type of reclining chair you can recline or inline the back and footrest of the chair at any position and angle you desire. This is achieved by a two motor system which allows the back to recline and stay at any position you want. Unlike its two and three position recliner counter-parts, the footrest in the infinite position reclining chairs can be adjusted separately, thus giving you the best and most comfortable experience on the reclining chair. You can use this type of chair for all purposes, including sleeping, relaxing, reading, thinking and much more.

Apart from this the reclining chairs are also available with other additional options, like swivelling reclining chairs, recliner chair with arm rest, massage recliner chairs and so on.
